Numbers:Toward the Land of Promise
The book of Numbers reveals God to be sovereign over the way of His people, completely worthy of trust and obedience.
God led His people out of slavery and toward the Land of Promise by “the way of the wilderness.” As they journeyed, the Israelites came to know the wilderness as a place of teaching, of testing, of trying and of training; a place where they learned of the compassion of God toward their weaknesses and the severity of God toward their rebellion. In the wilderness, the people of God repeatedly faced the choice to either trust and obey or doubt and defy their God who freed them from bondage.
In the first part of this study of Numbers, we saw that when the people chose to trust and obey, their journey progressed; when they chose to doubt and defy, their way grew stagnant. As we continue in our study of Numbers, God faithfully leads the Israelites onward, through the wilderness, and toward the Land of Promise. God persists in His promises to the next generation and continues to save His people from the perils of the journey.
More than mere history, the journey of the Israelites provides invaluable instruction to believers today. As we look together at the story of Numbers, the faith of the Israelites will encourage us and the failures of the Israelites will correct us, as we too faithfully follow God to the place of His promise. This nine week, in-depth study can be used for individual, small, or large group study.
