Numbers:The Way of the Wilderness

The book of Numbers details the journey of the Israelites away from their slavery in Egypt and toward the Land of Promise "by way of the wilderness.”

While certainly not the most direct route, the wilderness was the means through which God prepared His people for the inheritance before them. Through their journey, the Israelites came to know the wilderness as a place of teaching, of testing, of trying and of training; a place where they learned of the compassion of God toward their weaknesses and the severity of God toward their rebellion. In the wilderness, the people of God repeatedly faced the choice to either trust and obey or doubt and defy their God who freed them from bondage.

More than mere history, the journey of the Israelites provides invaluable instruction to believers today. As we look together to the story of Numbers, the faith of the Israelites will encourage us and the failures of the Israelites will correct us. Their journey serves as an example to us today, as we faithfully follow God to the place of our own inheritance. This nine week, in-depth study can be used for individual, small, or large group study.
